My Mother Faye DOUBLE AND Horace COULSON divorced when I was very young.
My Mother married Frank Alan RANSOM when I was about 3 or 4 years old.
My education was begun at Albuera St School and my High School was New Town Technical High at New Town.
In 1962 I applied for an apprenticeship with the R.A.N. I was accepted after passing the relevant exams and medical tests. At that time only 2 applicants from Tasmania were accepted for the Apprenticeship School, Ian D’EMDEN and myself.
We entered H.M.A.S. Nirimba, which was in Quakers Hill, N.S.W. in June 1962.
Ian and I both turned 15 years of age in March with Ian being 2 days younger than myself.
I completed my apprenticeship as a Naval Shipwright in June 1966. and was granted 3 months advancement for gaining credits in my Trade Theory Examinations.
This was very handy as I received an extra 3 months extra pay each time I was promoted.
My first Ship I was sent to was H.M.A.S. Sydney.
One of my first jobs was to assist in refitting the Ex- Aircraft Carrier into a Troop Ship to transport military personnel to Vietnam.
H.M.A.S. Sydney was to become known affectionately as “The Vung Tau Ferry”.
All of my latter sea postings were to be H.M.A.S. Sydney.
I was promoted to Petty Officer in 1967 and to Chief Petty Officer Naval Shipwright in 1968.
I completed six trips to Vietnam on H.M.A.S. Sydney between 1964 and 1972.
My primary job was Damage Control and Ship’s Maintenance.
In 1970 I was posted to H.M.A.S. Nirimba , a Shore Establishment in Sydney which was the Apprenticeship Training Establishment for the Royal Australian Navy.
My job there was as the Painting Instructor for Naval Shipwright Apprentices.
I remained in the Navy at H.M.A.S.
