The records in Hobart state that James BACCUS of Colchester, Essex was transported on 'Lord William Bentinck', arrived 20 Aug 1832.
His crime was desertion from the army and he was to be detained at Port Arthur for seven years from the date of his arrival.At the court martial 11 Sept 1837 for absconding, he was sentenced to the hulk where his report was good 21 Dec 1838 to July 1843.
In Aug 1843 he was sent to Port Arthur to be reconsidered.
On 26 May 1845 he was absent from the Gang without leave, and sentenced to 3 months hard labour in chains.

William Benbow as a 27 year old boatman from Worcester who was tried in Worcestershire in 1822 and found guilty of stealing 17 Trusses of Hay from a cow shed at Shrub’s Hill - the property of Archibald Cameron - valued at Twenty shillings.
He was sentenced to 7 years Transportation.
He was also indicted, but not tried, for stealing a Deal Board valued at 4 shillings, the property of Richard Heming & Henry Rowe.
He appeared to receive his sentence with much pleasure, and thanked the Chairman.
He spent several months on a prison hulk and was sent to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania) on the "Competitor 1" leaving England on 18 March 1823 arriving 3 August 1823.
William BENBOW was described as five foot two & a half inches (1.59 metres) brown hair & brown eyes, and of stout build.
He left behind a father, who was a glovemaker; a wife and 3 children in Worcester.
William's Occupation was given as Boatman from Worcester.
He was disorderly in Gaol but his hulk report states orderly.
In Tasmania his record was not good.He was given 58 lashes and put in a chain gang for 6 months for threatening his master and disobediance of orders.
Defrauding his Master of sums of money (12 months chain gang)
He absconded from the chain gang on 2 occasions and recieved a further 50 lashes.
He finished his sentence on 31 October 1829.
William and Rebecca purchased and sold parcels of land around Hobart, during the period 1831 to 1836.
William Benbow was a baker up to 1836.On 21 September of that year he leased 30 acres at Snug from James Aske for 14 years at a price of 17 Pounds and a yearly peppercorn. .
On 17 December 1837 Rebecca, using her real name JARVIS purchased this land from the actual owner John WAUGH( also an ex-veteran).
William BENBOW was drowned in the Snug River on 27 March 1843, the inquest being held the next day at Rebecca's house.
Rebecca BENBOW (nee JARVIS) testified:
The deceased Wm. Benbow was my husband, he was forty three years old.
About half past three o’clock yesterday I was in the house when a man who works for Felix Connolly came & said I was to send Brewer down, that he believed either the boat or the craft was swamped, so I sent my boy down to Brewer & heard no more of the matter until Felix Connolly came up about an hour afterwards & told me my husband was drowned.
I went down immediately to the mouth of the river where I fainted away and do not know what occurred until I found myself at home and the dead body of my husband in the house. …“The body was in respect & I examined it, there were no marks of violence whatever on it.
My husband was quite sober when I last saw him alive about two o’clock yesterday.
Rowe was also quite sober.
I am not aware of any quarrel between Rowe & my husband.
They were on perfect good terms at dinner yesterday & have always been so far as I know.
I have no reason to supposed that my husband’s death was caused otherwise than by accidentally.
Rebecca Benbow(her mark).” It is interesting to note that the employee with him at the time of the drowning, who also tried to save him, was one Henry Rowe. (Also the name of the man from whom William stole in Worcester!)
Wm.Benbow was buried 30 Mar 1843 according to St.David’s Church of England records, at Cornelian Bay Cemetery. (Snug was not opened until the 1850s.)

William & Rebecca JARVIS arrived in Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) with No. 3 Company on 26 August 1826 aboard "JOHN BARRY" & lived in Army barracks at a military post established in 1826 at Brighton on the north side of the Derwent River about 15 miles from Hobart Town.
Rebecca was 31 & Wm. still a private in Royal Veterans.
William. was discharged from the Veterans and was given allotment 20 in Veteran's row (now Murray Street).
William apparently deserted his family sometime after 1835 and went to NSW where he died of senile decay at the Govt. Asylum, Parramatta on 16 Aug 1867, aged 82.
Around 1832 Rebecca entered into a de facto relationship with William Benbow, and ex convict, and had 5 more children.
They purchased and sold parcels of land around Hobart during the period 1831 to 1836.
In 1837 Rebecca bought 30 acres in Kingborough on Snug RivuletWilliam Benbow drowned on 27 March 1843, the inquest being held the next day at Rebecca's house
After William BENBOW died, Rebecca took up with John Turnbull, and their son Frederick Henry Turnbull was born 29th July 1845.
Rebecca Jarvis was "a farmer's wife" when she died on 24 April 1859, age 62.
Cause of death was "brain damage sustained through falling downstairs whilst under the influence of liquor causing compression of the Brain by rupture of Blood vessel".
She was buried at Snug Cemetery with her son William Henry & his wife Mary, and next to Thomas Benbow's daughter Caroline.
