Extracted from "We Are Not Here" by Robyn Friend
"Aboriginal People Of The Huon And Channel Today"Mary Ann's Baptism is shown as being two years prior to the registration of the COWEN / BLEASE marriage.
Mary Ann is identified with sister Matilda Ann as Aboriginal by oral tradition.
Mary Ann as "Granny Bone" and Matilda Ann as "Aunt Til"The story goes that Aboriginal children assigned to or taken by Thomas COWEN were "adopted into the COWEN Family.
As early as 1819, SORELL, in a proclamation, referred to the abduction of native children by settlers.
{N.J.B. PLOMLEY - The Aboriginal Settler Clash in Van Dieman's Land 1803 - 1831}These "missing" children would simply have disappeared into the community, their Aboriginality unrecorded.
Another possibility is that Thomas COWEN, who was in the District some years before the advent of his marriage to Mary, cohabited with an Aboriginal woman before and perhaps during his marriage and that the children of both women were simply registered as children of the "Legal Marriage".
There are certainly families known as the "Black COWENS" and families known as the "White COWENS" still living in the district.
However the Aboriginality of "Granny BONE" as evidenced by her grandchildren and Great Grandchildren within the test is, to the Huon Aboriginal Community and to this writer, beyond doubt.
Mary Ann died in Hobart 27 Jan 1927.
